The first time it occurred to me that [my mother] had a problem, she was still in the old house in Texas and I was working in Zambia. I visited her on Thursdays for dinner. Sometimes I brought my daughter Clair when she was still a baby, but on this occasion I didn’t. Within moments of walking in the door, it was clear Juliet wasn’t entirely herself.
“I wish you wouldn’t use that thing,” she said.
“What thing?”
“That terrible machine. D-mat.”
